FACT of the MATTER:
GSI Letter to Members says, “Vote No Prop 4”
Perhaps you’ve heard talk about a group that goes by the name "Envision Spokane” or have seen signs around town urging you to “Vote No on Prop 4.” In a message to Greater Spokane Inc. (GSI) members, President and CEO Rich Hadley explains that the Envision Spokane group is headed by an environmental attorney from Pennsylvania who has succeeded in passing similar “test” legislation in smaller towns across the US. This group has succeeded in getting 10 amendments to the City Charter (identified as Proposition 4) on the November ballot.
According to GSI, Proposition 4 would allow an unelected, small group of activists to block any development in any area of the city, without regard to whether it complies with zoning laws and has been approved by the City Council. GSI’s position is that this amendment would stifle business growth, increase unemployment and drive businesses out of the Spokane city limits.
GSI is conducting an economic analysis of Proposition 4, to gauge potential costs in terms of dollars, jobs and opportunities for businesses and other taxpayers. They will release the results of our analysis very soon.
JOBS Coalition – an organization formed to fight the proposed bill – has more information on their website at http://www.spokanejobs2009.com. Although difficult to navigate, you may also want to visit Envision Spokane’s website at http://bit.ly/9SQwu or you can read a summary here that GSI has provided.
GSI is sponsoring a panel discussion involving members of the business community and Envision Spokane on Friday, Oct. 9th at Good Morning Greater Spokane (GSI's breakfast.)
