Your HEALTH Counts: Learning About Bike to Work Week

Have you ever been caught in a slow-moving lane, knowing you were going to be late for work, and watched a commuter on a bike able to whiz past you in a bike lane? 

Makes you jealous, doesn't it?  Me too. I've wanted to try biking to work but -- let's face it -- this was not the ideal fall-winter-spring to get into biking. And I live on Southhill, so I've been hesitant to attempt a commute when it meant lots of traffic, gravel, potholes and -- well -- snow.

But I'm taking up the gauntlet and participating in the Spokane Bike to Work Week! And I hope you will too.

If bicycle commuting is new to you, this is a great program to get you started because they offer workshops that feature traffic skills, tips on clothing, gear and lighting as well as prize drawings and refreshments. The workshops are free and available on a walk-in basis--no need to register. Workshop times, dates and locations are:

The event sponsors can also help you find a "Biking Buddy" who will help you find a safe route to work and even accompany you if you're still a bit nervous.

For seasoned riders/commuters,you may want to take the opportunity to rally your co-workers to join you. Challenge yourself, challenge your workmates!
